MASTERED BY THE MASTER - Part 1

(FATHER’S DAY SERIES)

Grace Bible Church, Gillette, Wyoming

Pastor Daryl Hilbert

I.     DEFINITION OF LORD

A.    There are several words in the Bible, which are translated or mean “master” or “lord.”

B.    Two in particular, despótęs and kúrios.

1.     Despótęs

a)    It primarily means full ownership and disposal to do as one pleases.

b)    It can have a negative connotation with cruel taskmasters (1Pe 2:18-20).

c)     It can have a positive connotation and is a name for the Lord (Rev 6:10; Jud 1:4; 2Pe 2:1)

2.     Exousiázō

a)    It is a verb that means that one has power and authority over someone or something.

b)    It is authority over persons (Luk 22:25).

c)     It is authority over things (1Co 6:12).

3.     Kúrios

a)    It is used some 717 times in the NT and a total of 8,816 in the Bible.

b)    Though it primarily meant to have authority or legal jurisdiction over  has also come to include ownership and disposal. So it encompasses the ideas of both despótęs and exousiázō. It is translated as, “Lord” or “Master.”

c)     It is the possessor, owner, or master of property (Mat 20:8; 15:27).

d)    It is the possessor, owner, or master of people (Act 16:16; Eph 6:5).

e)     It is the equivalent for the name, “Jehovah” in both the OT and NT (Gen 2:8, 15-16; Isa 6:1, 3, 5; Mat 1:22; Jam 4:15).

II.    DEFINITION OF LORDSHIP

A.    Since Kúrios is ascribed to God and it refers to His ownership and authority over all, we are speaking of God’s Lordship.

B.    Definitions of Lordship (Divine):

1.     Lordship is having at His disposal the freedom to create, exercise dominion, dictate morality, judge, overrule, and destroy.

2.       Lordship involves the idea that God has all sovereignty and power to rule over all creation in all that He desires. Therefore, all creation is obligated to absolute submission to Him.

3.     The light of nature showeth that there is a God, who hath lordship and sovereignty over all; is good, and doth good unto all; and is therefore to be feared, loved, praised, called upon, trusted in, and served, with all the heart, and with all the soul, and with all the might. (Westminster Confession)

III.  THE LORDSHIP OF CHRIST

A.    Kúrios Refers To Christ’s Position

1.     In the Scriptures, Christ is designated as, “the Lord Jesus” (30 times -  Mar 16:19; Act 1:21; “Lord Jesus Christ” - 22 times - Act 11:17; Rom 1:7; Phi 3:20).

2.     In regard to believers, Christ is referred to as, “our Lord” (72 times - Rom 4:24; 1Co 1:2; Eph 6:24).

3.     In regard to the church Christ is Lord and Head (Eph 1:22; Eph 5:23; Col 1:18).

B.    Kúrios Refers To Christ’s Deity

1.     By the resurrection, Christ was declared both Lord and the Son of God (Rom 1:4).

2.     Christ is to be confessed as Lord, a designation given only to Jehovah in the OT proving Christ’s deity (Rom 10:9; Isa 26:13; 45:5-7).

C.    Kúrios Refers To Christ’s Name (Phil 2:6-11)

1.     What name was Christ given that is above every name? It would not be the name of “Jesus” because he had been given that common name by his parents (Mat 1:21; Luk 2:21).

2.     The name would be “Lord” because “Lord” is “above every name.” Furthermore, vs. 11 reveals that every tongue will confess that name is, “Lord.” One of the first creeds of early church was, “Jesus is Lord.” (Phil 2:11; 1Co 12:3)

3.     Christ was Lord and God before the incarnation (cp. Joh 17:5), but upon successfully accomplishing redemption as the God-Man, Christ was exalted (huperupsóō - super exalted) to the position of Lord once again (cp. Act 2:34; Psa 110:1).

4.     Phil 2:11 describes the Lordship of Christ as absolute lordship by the use of “of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth” and absolute submission by the use of “every knee will bow” and “every tongue confess.” Paul quotes Isa 45:23 to show the deity of Christ.

IV.  BELIEVERS MASTERED BY THE MASTER

A.    Mastered In Lordship Sanctification (1Ti 6:15)

1.     The church is in danger of losing the most precious truth of the Lordship of Christ.

2.     It is certainly debatable when some maintain that one must reform and conform to the Lordship of Christ before they can come to Christ. However, it is undebatable that a believer, who has come to Christ, must reform and conform to the Lordship of Christ.

3.     Christ is the Lord and therefore the believer’s Lord. If Christ is the believer’s Lord, then Christ has absolute rule over the believer’s life. The Scriptures would hold suspect those who profess Christ but never change (Col 1:23; 1Jo 2:19; Jud 1:24 cp. 2Co 5:17).

B.    Mastered In Active Obedience (Luk 6:46)

1.     Many believers use the expression, “Jesus is Lord” without ever giving any consideration to what that actually means.

2.     Jesus tells us what is means to call Him, “Lord.” According to Luk 6:46, to call Jesus “Lord” means to submit, hear His words, and act and obey them.

3.     Obedience to Christ Lordship is the believer’s expression of submission and love (Joh 14:15).

C.    Mastered In Every Area Of Life (1Co 6:12)

1.     If Christ is Lord at all, then he is certainly Lord of all (areas of the believer’s life).

2.     Allowing Christ Lordship is simply allowing Christ to have control of our life, and to have access to every area of life; be that area your innermost secret, or innermost problem, be that area your dating, be that area your job, be it anything. (Derickson)

3.     Be submissive to Christ’s rule in life for what you are to be and what you are to do, whatever, whenever, or wherever.

4.     Have you turned over every area to the Lord Jesus? Are you mastered by the Master?
