OF LEADERSHIP FROM NEHEMIAH Various
Scriptures from Nehemiah (10/10/10) Grace
Bible Church, Gillette, Wyoming Pastor
Daryl Hilbert I. PREREQUISITES FOR
LEADERSHIP 1. Leadership is attainable
in spite of background, status, or past failures. 2. Leadership’s prerequisite is a personal
faith and relationship in the Lord Jesus Christ. 3. Leadership begins with a burden for God’s
will and purposes (Ne 1:4). 4. Leadership’s first task is to depend upon
God (Ne 1:4). 5. Leadership takes time to prayerfully plan
before God (Ne 1:5‑11). 6. Leadership trusts God to work in and
through authorities (Ne 2:5). 7. Leadership focuses on God’s will in and
through fearful conditions (Ne 2:2‑4). 8. Leadership understands
that fearing God is the key to successful leadership (Ne 1:5; 5:9, 15; 7:2) II. PRINCIPLES OF LEADERSHIP
ON ACCOMPLISHING TASKS 9. Leadership surveys the
needs and situations of the task at hand (Ne 2:11-12). 10. Leadership takes everything
into consideration to establish a course of action (Ne 2:17). 11. Leadership commits the work unto the Lord
(Ne 3:1). 12. Leadership details the work to reduce the
burden on others (Ne 3:16). 13. Leadership reprioritizes the work of God to
first place when distractions come (Ne 6:3). 14. Leadership works and oversees people and
projects until completion (Ne 6:15). 15. Leadership knows that the moment after
success is the most dangerous time (Ne 7:1a). [Example of the Lord
Jesus Christ (Jn 19:30)] III. PRINCIPLES OF LEADERSHIP
ON OPPOSITION FROM WITHOUT 16. Leadership recognizes that
there will always be trouble in the midst of ministry (Ne 2:10). 17. Leadership responds to
opposition with repeated prayers and petitions (Ne 4:4‑5, 9). 18. Leadership expects increasing opposition and
prepares to pray and work through it. (Ne 4:11‑13) 19. Leadership must continue to work while being
ready for battle (Ne 4:17‑18) 20. Leadership disregards the false information
in personal attacks (Ne 6:3). 21. Leadership stands firm on the work of God in
the face of fear and threats (Ne 6:8) 22. Leadership understands that accomplishing
the work of God defeats the enemy (Ne 6:16) [Example of the Lord
Jesus Christ (Co 2:15; He 2:14)] IV. PRINCIPLES OF LEADERSHIP ON
OPPOSITION FROM WITHIN 23. Leadership concentrates on
the task at hand when others refuse to work (Ne 3:5). 24. Leadership watches out for
the potential danger of internal dissension (Ne 6:17). 25. Leadership deals with all dissension so that
the work of God goes unhindered (Ne 5:1‑6, 16). 26. Leadership manages emotions and situations
rather than being managed by them (Ne 5:7a). 27. Leadership encourages, exhorts, and reproves
others to walk in God‑fearing conduct (Ne 5:7b, 9). 28. Leadership understands that stern measures
are necessary at times (Ne 13:8, 17, 25). [Example of the Lord
Jesus Christ (Jn 2:15; Mt 21:12-13)] V. PRINCIPLES OF LEADERSHIP
ON WORKING WITH PEOPLE
29. Leadership has the ability
to encourage others to arise and build (Ne 2:18). 30. Leadership learns how to
work effectively with all types of people (Ne 3:5). 31. Leadership gives credit where credit is due
(Ne 3:13, 20). 32. Leadership puts into practice the very same
biblical principles expected of others (Ne 5:10). 33. Leadership earns the respect of others
through just and wise leadership (Ne 5:12‑13). 34. Leadership does not seek self‑advantage
but God’s glory and the good of His people (Ne 5:15‑18). 35. Leadership discerns character through the
knowledge of the Word of God (Ne 6:12). 36. Leadership first dedicates themselves to the Lord, then encourages others to do the
same (Ne 10:1). 37. Leadership views the needs of the group
according to the main goal of edification (Ne 11:1). 38. Leadership is aware of the needs of the
group and those who can meet them (Ne 11:1) 39. Leadership is able to spur on volunteers,
who are so paramount to success (Ne 11:2). 40. Leadership is indebted to those who
persevere through the years in service to the Lord (Ne 11:12). 41. Leadership is faithful in keeping their word
and bringing promises to fruition (Ne 2:6; 13:6). 42. Leadership exercises the principle and art
of delegation to faithful believers (Ne 7:1b‑2). 43. Leadership promotes faithful individuals,
faithful support, and faithful ministry (Ne 13:13). Example of the Lord Jesus
Christ (Phil 2:5-7) VI. PRINCIPLES OF LEADERSHIP ON
REVIVAL (13) 44. Leadership understands that
revival comes through the teaching the Word of God (Ne 8:1‑12). 45. Leadership understands that
the evidences of true revival are outlined in the Scriptures: 1. A
greater desire to study the Word (Ne 8:13, 18) 2. A greater desire to carry out biblical
principles (Ne 8:14) 3. A greater desire to help others carry out
biblical principles (Ne 8:15‑16) 4. A greater desire to recommit to old
biblical convictions (Ne 8:14, 17b) 5. A greater joy in doing the Lord’s
ministry (Ne 8:17c) 6. A greater desire to be set apart unto God
(Ne 9:2) 7. A greater compulsion to confess sin and
repent. (Ne 9:3) 8. A greater desire to worship the Lord in
spirit and truth. (Ne 9:4‑5) 9. A greater capacity for prayer (Ne 9:5b‑25) 10. A greater ability for breaking the cycle of
sin (Ne 9:26‑37) 11. A greater volition for dedication (Ne 9:38‑10:1‑39) [Example of the Lord
Jesus Christ (Jn 17:17).] VII. PRINCIPLES OF LEADERSHIP ON
PERSONAL DEVOTION AND WORSHIP (11) 46. Leadership understands the
necessity of spiritual rededication to God and His Word (Ne 5:12‑13). 47. Leadership fulfills the
will of God by following the Word of God (Ne 6:11). 48. Leadership does not let any personal
behavior discredit their ministry (Ne 6:13). 49. Leadership exercises spiritual rejoicing
which promotes the same in others (Ne 8:10; 12:43). 50. Leadership recognizes all blessings come
from the Lord and give due worth-ship (Ne 12:27). 51. Leadership understands that dedication
encompasses our labor and possessions (Ne 12:44-45). 52. Leadership trusts in God to sovereignly take
care of all things in their absence (Ne 13:6). 53. Leadership understands that unbelievers
cannot be a part of worship and ministry (Ne 13:8). 54. Leadership understands that reforms must be
checked periodically (Ne 13:10-11; 15, 23). 55. Leadership understands all things are
by-product of one’s relationship with the Lord (Ne 13:30-31). 56. Leadership never loses its passion for the
Lord, His Word, His people, and His service (Ne 13). [Example of the Lord
Jesus Christ (Mt 27:46)] VIII. CONCLUSION A. Nehemiah, a mere
cup-bearer became a shining leader and reformer in a post-exilic time when
the people of God had no leader, no direction, no spirituality, and of
course, no wall. Indeed, it could be said of Nehemiah that he was a man who
built more than brick walls. B. By knowing, understanding, and practicing
the principles drawn from Nehemiah’s life and leadership, we will not only be
able to lead in a successful manner, but be used by God to accomplish great
things for God, and especially exemplify the Lord Jesus Christ. |
