AGENTS OF
SANCTIFICATION (Scriptures) 3/13/13 Grace Bible Church,
Gillette, Wyoming Pastor Daryl Hilbert V. AGENTS OF SANCTIFICATION A. The Father 1. As with all divine acts, the triune
Godhead is co-responsible. Whether it is creation (Father -
Ge 1:1; Is 64:8; Son - Jn 1:3; Col 1:15-17; Spirit - Ge 1:2; Jb 33:4), the
Scriptures (Father - Is 55:11; Son - Ro 10:17; Col 3:16; Spirit - 2Pe 1:21;
He 3:7) Christ’s resurrection (Father - Ge 1:1; Is 64:8; Son - Jn 1:3; Col
1:15-17; Spirit - Ge 1:2; Jb 33:4), or any divine work, all three members of
the Godhead participate together. This also applies to the believer’s
sanctification. 2. The Father has been
designated to plan the believer’s sanctification. a) Sanctification is according to the
Father’s choosing and foreknowledge (2Th 2:13; 1Pe 1:2). b) Sanctification is the Father’s will for
the believer (1Th 4:3). c) It is the Father’s plan to sanctify the
believer completely (spirit, soul, and body) (1Th 5:23). d) It is to the Father that the Son prays to
for the believer’s sanctification (Jn 17:17). B. The Son 1. Though the Son would have been part of
the planning of sanctification, His specific work was His death on the cross. 2. Christ’s atoning work on the cross is the
basis for the believer’s sanctification. a) The Son prayed for the believer’s
sanctification (Jn 17:17). b) The Son’s atoning work enables the
believer to be sanctified (Jn 17:19). c) The believer is sanctified through the
blood of Christ (He 13:12). d) The Son’s sacrifice perfected the
believer’s positional sanctification (He 10:14). e) On the basis of the Son’s work, He has
become the believer’s sanctification (1Co 1:30). C. The Spirit 1. Though the Father planned sanctification
and the Son’s death is the basis for sanctification, the Spirit is the
predominant agent in the believer’s sanctification. 2. The Spirit is the divine agent who especially
works on, in, and through the believer in the sanctification process. a) Explicit References (1) The Spirit’s work of sanctification begins
in cooperation with the Father’s predestination of the believer (2Th 2:13;
1Pe 1:2). (2) The Spirit’s work of sanctification is in
cooperation with the Son’s work of justification on the cross (1Co 6:11). (3) The Spirit’s work settles and seals the
believer’s positional sanctification in Christ (1Co 6:11). b) Implicit References (1) If the Spirit is the predominant divine
agent in sanctification, then the Spirit is giving the believer the desire
and power to live in holiness (Php 2:13). (2) If the Spirit’s work of sanctification is
to make the believer holy, then the Spirit is changing the believer and
producing His fruit in him (2Co 3:18; Ga 5:22-23). (3) If the believer is to cooperate with the
process of sanctification, then the Spirit must fill and empower him to do so
(Ep 5:18; Php 2:12). (4) If the Spirit began the work of sanctification
in the believer (2Th 2:13), then the Spirit will continue it until the day of
Jesus Christ (Php 1:6). |
