NT Greek 1 Class

Week 1 

            

I.        BRIEF HISTORY OF BIBLICAL GREEK

 

A.      God instrumentally brought Koine Greek to the world. (Gal 4:4)

B.      Alexander the Great made Greek the common world language.

C.      Koine means common in contrast with Classical Greek (Acts 2:44; 4:32 - koinos).

D.      The New Testament is written in Koine Greek.

E.       It is one of the greatest languages to express detail (Jn 1:1).

 

II.      WHY HAVE AN UNDERSTANDING OF GREEK?

 

A.      To receive deeper and personal insights from God’s Word.

B.      To master tools for Bible study.

C.      To comprehend Greek expressions from Commentaries and Teachers.

D.      To evaluate differences in Translations.

 

III.   DEPENDENCE OF ENGLISH ON GREEK LANGUAGE

 

A.      Transliterations (a Greek word brought directly into English)

1.       Angel - angelos

2.       Bible - Biblos

3.       Baptism - Baptisma

4.       Christ - Christos

5.       Christian - Christianos

B.      Derivatives (English words based on Greek words)

1.       Archaeology - archê = old & logos = study

2.       Barometer - baros = heavy & metros = measurement

3.       Chiropractic - chīrō = hand & praxis = practice)

 

X.   APPLICATIONS (Rev 1:8; 22:13)

 

NAU Rev 22:13 "I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end."

 

a.       The first and last letters of the Greek alphabet have become a name for God.

b.       It speaks of the eternality of God because He is the One who is the beginning.

c.        It speaks of the sovereignty of God because He is the One who works out His own ends.

d.       This also speaks of God’s omniscience because God knows the beginning from the end.

e.        This name proves the deity of Christ because Christ is given the same name (Rev 22:13).

f.        Nothing can sever our relationship, nor thwart the will of our eternal sovereign God, who is from the beginning and will complete His will to the end.

g.        Submission to Christ’s Lordship will characterize eternity but this submission is to begin now.
