GRACE IN THE SECOND ADAM (Rom
5:15-21) 8/26/07 Grace Bible Church, Gillette, Wyoming Pastor INTRODUCTION A. The typology of Christ in Adam is now expounded upon
and contrasted in vs. 15-21. It is a series of contrasts involving the use of
the identification of the one (henòs) man versus the other man eleven times. B. The First Adam was shown (12-14) to have brought sin
and death upon the world. C. The Second Adam (Christ) is shown to not only be
superior, but also to have victoriously overcome the results of the first
Adam (“much more,” “even so”). D.
Unbelievers are
still positionally in the First Adam. Believers are positionally in the
Second Adam (Christ). I.
COMPARISON OF
FIRST AND SECOND ADAM (Rom 5:15-21) II.
COMPARISON
EXPLAINED A. Transgression Entered Vs. Grace Entered (5:15) 1. Through Adam came the entrance of the transgression
and “many died” (apothnếskō)
meaning “death spread to all men” (vs. 12). 2. Through Christ came the entrance of the gift of
grace and grace “abounded” (perisseúō
- left over, more than enough) to many. 3. The “gift” (chárisma -
free gift that cannot be earned) is described as the “grace (cháris - undeserved favor) of God.” This
grace is found, not in the first Adam, but in (en - primary idea denoting a static position; ex. dot in the middle
of a circle) Christ (cp. “in
Christ” - well over a hundred
references - Rom 3:24; 6:11; 8:1; Eph
1:1, 3; 2:6). B. Condemnation Resulted Vs. Justification Resulted
(5:16) 1. Through Adam, the result of his transgression was judgment
and “condemnation” (katákrima - bring down the penalty). 2. Through Christ, the result of the gift of grace is
justification (dikaíōma - acquittal and declaration of
righteousness) because man’s transgressions
were imputed to Christ (2Co 5:21). 3. Justification by faith alone in Christ alone is the
theme of Romans (Rom 1:17; 3:21-22). C. Death Reigned Vs. Life Reigns (5:17) 1. Through Adam, sin and death reigned (fr. basileúō - to be ruling king) in the world. “Death” (thánatos - Gen 2:17, 3:4) is understood as: (1)
Physical - Gen 5:5, and (2) Spiritual - Rev 21:8. 2. Through the Second Adam (Christ), “much more,” life
reigns. Grace is seen as an “abundance” (from
the same root - perisseúō (vs. 15) -
left over, more than enough) of grace. 3. “Life” (zōḗ: is understood as: (1) Present Eternal
Life - Joh 5:24; 10:10, and (2) Future Eternal Life - Mat 25:46). This
eternal life is applied to those who take hold of the free gift of
righteousness by faith. D. Condemnation To All Vs. Justification To All (5:18) 1. Through Adam, the full scope was condemnation upon
all men. “Condemnation” (katákrima) is a legal technical term for the result
of judging, including both the sentence and its execution (cp. 8:1). 2. Through Christ, the full scope is “justification” of
“all men. This is parallelism (cp. “many” vss. 15, 19) and not a
universalistic philosophy that all will be saved. Only those drawn by the Father
and exercise faith in Christ will receive justification (cf. 3:28; 4:5, 13). E. Declared Sinners Vs. Declared Righteous (5:19) 1. Through Adam’s imputation, man’s legal status has
been judicially declared as sinners (hamartoloì),
those who have missed the mark of God’s righteous standard (Rom 3:10-18; 23).
2. Through
Christ’s imputation, those who place their faith in Christ are “made
righteous” (fr, kathístemi - to place or appoint to a
position) judicially righteous (díkaios). 3. The word kathístêmi, may also allude to the believer’s sanctification
and glorification. F. Transgression Increased Vs. Grace Increased (5:20) 1. Through Adam, the sin and death which was upon
mankind was revealed by God’s holy Law (3:20; 4:15). 2. Through Christ, grace “abounded all the more” (huperperisseúō - superlative of greater degree; used
only twice in the N.T.) in forgiveness of sin and its penalty revealed by
the Law (Joh 1:14-17). G. Sin Reigned In Death Vs. Grace Reigns In Eternal
Life (5:21) 1. Through Adam, the final outcome was that sin reigned
universally over mankind in death. This is man’s position in the First Adam
and is why he needed a Savior. 2. Through Christ, the final outcome is that He
conquered sin (Joh 1:36), death (2Ti 1:10), and the works of the Devil (Heb
2:14-15). Now, in Christ, life reigns eternal. III.
OBSERVATIONS ON
GRACE IN THE SECOND ADAM A. An individual is positionally either in the First
Adam or the Second. B. An unbeliever is positionally is the First Adam. C. A believer is positionally in the second Adam
(Christ - 1Co 15:48-49; Rom 5:21). D. A believer who is in Christ possesses all spiritual
blessings in Christ (Eph 1:3). E. A believer who is in Christ is a new creation
capable of victorious Christian living (2Co 5:17 cp. Rom 6:1ff). |
